There is a scene inthe 2005 film adaptation of Pride & Prejudice where Lydia, one of the five Bennett sisters eagerly searching for love and matrimony, hatches a master plan to meet men. She proudly boasts that she need only drop her handkerchief, and an officer will pick it up, and then they will be introduced to one another.

This series, “Alone But So Connected”, was inspired by an article written by Amelia Diamond for the popular blog, Man Repeller, entitled “Ask A French Girl About Digital-World Dating”. In the article, Diamond asks Laura (the aforementioned French girl) about her thoughts on contemporary dating apps. Laura states, “They’re the right contradiction of the world we live in. It’s endless research of what we don’t have. It’s a business, like any other. And yet, I have some friends who met through these sites, and I love knowing they are happy. I guess it’s controversial, but it sums up our generation: alone, but so connected.”

In today’s day and age, our methods for meeting prospective partners has been streamlined even further. Download Tinder (Bumble, Grindr, take your pick), swipe right for the ones you like, match, and then it must be love? Person-to-person interaction is reduced to sending pickup lines or flirtatious GIFs. “Alone But So Connected” is a sampling of some of the bi-lines that particularly stood out to me during my adventures of swiping.
